Godrej Archives owes its genesis to the vision conceived by Late Shri Sohrab Godrej, former Chairman of the Godrej Group of Industries. Born in 1912, Sohrab Godrej was appointed Chairman of the Godrej group of companies in 1972 following the demise of his father, Shri Pirojsha Godrej. As the Chairman of the group he promoted advertising and marketing activities and public relations.

The collection brings forth Sohrab Godrej's love for travel and adventure which took him to over 160 countries including Antartica. There are letters written by him from across the world to family members (father Pirojsha and brothers Naval and Burjor among others) narrating his experiences. He has methodically maintained records of his trips abroad including the itinerary, food preferences and picture postcards that he collected from all over the world.

Sohrab Godrej was the recipient of several awards, both national and international. In 1999 he was conferred with the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government. The collection includes a beautiful poem composed by Nadir Godrej, nephew of Sohrab Godrej, to celebrate the award. Newspaper clippings, newsletters, congratulatory messages and documents related to these awards are also a part of our collection.

The various causes espoused by Sohrabji, from family planning to preservation of the country's heritage, had made him a highly respected figure in India and in several other countries. His friendship with former Prime Ministers of India like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and several bureaucrats in responsible positions, presidents, chancellors of France, Germany, Great Britain and several other countries befitted his role as Chairman of the group. Noteworthy among his papers is the captivating correspondence between JRD Tata and Sohrab Godrej exchanged over time.

Newspaper/ magazine articles on Sohrab Godrej, his personal diaries (Closed records) and rough notes scribbled by him are carefully preserved in the archives. Finally, 'Mr. Sohrab Godrej and Family' is a wonderfully illustrated scrapbook containing biographical note, company profile, a note on Pirojshanagar, awards/honours received by Sohrab Godrej etc. maintained by Dr. Viraf Minocher Dhalla, for a much-loved and respected Chairman.
